Gate 04: Unifying Liquid

Up to this point, a dish is still several separate elements sitting in the same pan. Gate 04 is what turns them into one thing.

What it actually is

Stock, coconut milk, or cream in savoury cooking. Syrup, melted butter, or custard in baking. Whatever the specific ingredient, its job is the same: to carry everything built so far and bind it into a single, coherent dish.

How it shows up across cuisines, savoury and sweet, given equal weight

Coconut milk tying a Jamaican curry together does exactly the same structural job as an emulsion holding a vinaigrette together, or a pastry cream binding a dessert. It's tempting to treat this gate as a savoury-cooking idea with a dessert exception tacked on. It isn't. The binding role is identical either way, and a dessert that skips proper attention here falls apart in exactly the same way an under-bound curry does: good individual elements that never actually became a dish.

Why this matters

Without this stage, everything built in Gates 01 to 03 stays separate, good elements sitting next to each other rather than one dish. This is what makes something taste finished rather than assembled.
